First Light is a non-profit organization and a Center for homeless women and children in downtown Birmingham, Alabama. First Light was started in basement of First Presbyterian Church in 1983. It is their mission to create hospitality in a safe and nurturing community. The shelter provides services which includes emergency, legal, housing, support and children’s services.
First Light provides emergency services such as case management, crisis intervention services, domestic violence education, emergency shelter, safety planning, food and clothing.
First Light takes care of legal services covering assistance with orders of protection, court/legal assistance by attorney, court accompaniment/advocacy and legal resource planning.
First Light caters housing services that involves alternative housing counseling, permanent individual housing, transitional individual housing and transitional family housing.
First Light offers support services comprising goal planning assistance, health and wellness programs, job skills training, medical accompaniment, onsite medical services, spiritual services, resources and referrals.
First Light favors children’s services taking in pet therapy, school liaison and summer camp.
First Light welcomes women, elderly, individuals and families.
First Light accepts deaf, developmentally disabled, disabled, immigrant, LGBTQ, military, prostituted persons, rural, trafficked persons and trans women/men.
