Colorado SNAP basics

SNAP helps households with low income buy food. Colorado supervises the program, but county human services departments process applications, interviews, documents, renewals, and benefit changes.

A Colorado Quest EBT card can be used at authorized stores across the United States. SNAP can buy groceries such as bread, cereal, fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy, and seeds or plants that produce food. It cannot buy alcohol, tobacco, pet food, household supplies, vitamins, medicine, or hot food meant to be eaten right away.

Working parents may qualify. The county reviews household size, income, rent or mortgage, utilities, child care, and other allowed costs. Children under 22 who live with a parent are normally part of the parent’s SNAP household.

How to apply for SNAP

You can apply online through PEAK, use the MyCOBenefits mobile app, return a paper application, or ask your county for help. Use the official county office finder when you need an address, fax number, or phone number.

1. Submit the application as soon as possible. Your filing date can affect when benefits begin.
2. List everyone who lives with you and explain who buys and prepares food together.
3. Report income and costs such as rent, utilities, child care, and child support you pay.
4. Upload or send the proof requested by your county. Keep screenshots or receipts.
5. Complete the interview if the county requires one. If you miss a call, contact the county to reschedule.
6. Read every PEAK message, letter, text, and email until the case is decided.

Colorado says a county normally has up to 30 days to decide a SNAP application. Some households may qualify for expedited SNAP within seven days. The state lists examples such as having less than $100 in cash and less than $150 in monthly earnings, having housing costs above monthly income, or being an eligible migrant or seasonal farmworker household.

Ask for expedited screening when you apply if your family has very little income or money for food. A request does not guarantee faster approval; the county must check the federal rules.

Documents and information to gather

Apply even if one document is missing. Ask the county whether another person, written statement, agency record, or other proof can verify the fact. The full documents checklist can help when you apply for several programs.

Work rules and student rules

Colorado’s current able-bodied adult without dependents rule may apply to an adult who is age 18 through 64, is considered able to work, and does not live with a child under 14. A person covered by this rule normally must complete 20 hours of work or approved activity each week, or an average of 80 hours each month, to receive SNAP beyond three months in a 36-month period.

Many people are exempt. Colorado lists exemptions for pregnancy, disability, being unable to work, attending school or training at least half time, receiving or applying for unemployment, caring for a sick or disabled person, meeting TANF work rules, and other situations. Use the official SNAP work-rule page and ask the county to screen every exemption that may apply.

Colorado Employment First can provide education, training, work experience, and other approved activities for some SNAP recipients. The Employment First page explains the program. Do not wait for benefits to close before asking how to document work or an exemption.

College students enrolled at least half time face separate SNAP rules, but exemptions may apply. Parenting, work hours, disability, TANF participation, and certain education or training programs can matter. Ask the county or your school’s basic-needs office to review your exact situation.

Other food help in Colorado

WIC for pregnancy and young children

Colorado WIC serves eligible pregnant women, breastfeeding parents, recent mothers, infants, and children under 5. Caregivers can apply for a child. Families receiving SNAP, TANF, Medicaid, or FDPIR may be automatically income-eligible, but WIC still completes its own appointment and nutrition review.

School meals

School districts and eligible public school food authorities may join Colorado’s Healthy School Meals for All program and offer meals at no cost to students. Participation is optional, so check with your child’s school.

Summer EBT

Colorado Summer EBT, also called SUN Bucks, gives eligible children one $120 payment for summer groceries. Many children are enrolled automatically through SNAP, Colorado Works, qualifying Medicaid data, foster care, homelessness, migrant status, or school meal eligibility. Some families must apply when current income data is not on file.

Use the official Summer EBT page to check enrollment, apply, update an address, or request a card. The 2026 state rollout began in late May. Summer EBT is separate from the household’s regular SNAP benefit.

Food pantries and community help

Pantries can help while SNAP is pending, after a benefit cut, or when groceries run out early. Ask whether the site requires an appointment, ZIP code, bags, ID, or proof of household size. Ways to stretch SNAP benefits

Double Up Food Bucks matches SNAP spending for eligible Colorado-grown fruits and vegetables at participating locations, up to the current program limit. Some locations operate only during part of the year, so check before traveling.

The state SNAP Produce Bonus gives a dollar-for-dollar match back to an EBT account when a shopper buys eligible fruits and vegetables at participating stores or farm vendors. Program locations and purchase rules can change.

These programs do not increase the regular SNAP approval amount. They help an approved household get more produce when shopping at participating businesses.

EBT card help and safe use

Use the official Colorado EBT page for card and account guidance. Call 1-888-328-2656, or TTY 1-800-659-2656, to report a lost, stolen, or damaged card, change a PIN, order a replacement, or review transactions.

You can freeze and unfreeze the card through the ebtEDGE app or cardholder portal. Colorado also allows cardholders to block online or out-of-state transactions. The state recommends changing the PIN before the monthly benefit arrives.
