WIC Benefits for Single Mothers in California

Last updated: May 20, 2026

Bottom line

California WIC helps pregnant people, new parents, breastfeeding or chestfeeding parents, babies, and children under age 5. It is not cash. It gives monthly food benefits on a California WIC Card, plus nutrition help, breastfeeding support, referrals, and help finding other family services.

You may qualify if you live in California, are pregnant or recently had a pregnancy end, are breastfeeding or chestfeeding, or care for a child under age 5, and your household meets WIC income rules. Families with Medi-Cal, CalFresh, or CalWORKs may already meet the income test. Start with the official California WIC steps and then call a local office.

If you need food today

WIC can be very helpful, but it is not the fastest answer for every food emergency. If you have little or no food today, call 211 California, search the food bank finder, or ask your county about CalFresh. If you are already out of formula, call your WIC office and your child’s health care provider the same day, especially if your baby needs a medical formula.

For more food options, see ASMOM’s California food help guide and the national SNAP benefits guide for next steps.

Where to start

If you are pregnant

Call a local WIC office. Ask if you can count the expected baby in your household size if your income is close to the limit. Also ask about breastfeeding support and referrals for prenatal care.

If you have a baby

Ask WIC to check your food package, formula needs, and your postpartum or breastfeeding category. If your baby has special feeding needs, ask your doctor about WIC medical formula paperwork.

If your child is under 5

Children can receive WIC until their fifth birthday if they qualify. Ask what foods are loaded to the card and how to use the California WIC App before you shop.

Use the official WIC office finder to search by city or ZIP code. Local WIC agencies handle appointments, documents, benefit changes, and most card questions.

Who qualifies for California WIC?

WIC is for growing families. California says you may qualify if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or chestfeeding, recently had a baby or pregnancy loss in the last six months, or care for a child under age 5. You must live in California and have low-to-medium income or receive Medi-Cal, CalWORKs, or CalFresh.

USDA also lists the basic WIC groups: pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women, infants, and children up to their fifth birthday. The USDA eligibility page also explains that Medicaid, SNAP, or TANF can make a family income eligible in many cases.

Single mothers are not in a separate WIC category. That can be frustrating, but it also means you do not need to prove you are single. WIC looks at the people in your household, your income or other benefits, your California residence, and a simple nutrition check.

If you are also looking for a wider state list of support, use ASMOM’s California assistance guide. If health coverage is part of the problem, the Medicaid guide may help you understand the Medi-Cal link.

California WIC income limits for 2026

California WIC uses gross household income at 185% of the federal poverty level. The state income chart in effect on May 20, 2026 is for May 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027. The official WIC income chart is the best place to confirm numbers before you apply.

Household size Monthly gross income limit Annual gross income limit
1 $2,461 $29,526
2 $3,337 $40,034
3 $4,212 $50,542
4 $5,088 $61,050
5 $5,964 $71,558
6 $6,839 $82,066
7 $7,715 $92,574
8 $8,591 $103,082
Each extra person Add $876 Add $10,508

If you are pregnant and your income is close, ask the office if the expected baby can be counted in your household size. California WIC says this may be offered when a pregnant applicant does not meet the income limit at the current household size.

What California WIC gives you

WIC gives a mix of food benefits and support services. The exact foods depend on your category, your child’s age, breastfeeding status, medical needs, and current WIC food rules.

WIC help What it can do Watch for
Monthly foods Helps with items such as milk, eggs, cereal, whole grains, beans, peanut butter, yogurt, baby foods, and other approved foods. Brand, size, and food type matter.
Produce benefit Buys fruits and vegetables at approved stores and farmers that accept WIC. Dollar amounts can change by year.
Nutrition support Gives simple food and feeding advice from WIC staff. It is support, not medical care.
Breastfeeding help May include peer support, referrals, and pumps when appropriate. Ask early if work or school affects feeding.
Referrals Connects families to health care, CalFresh, Early Head Start, and local help. You may still need to apply separately.

The WIC foods page explains current food choices and updates. California says new food options began in mid-April 2026, and the WIC App shows each family’s updated balance and approved items.

Fruits and vegetables benefit

The California produce benefit page says the monthly amounts effective April 2026 are $26 for children ages 1 to 5, $48 for pregnant and postpartum individuals, $52 for fully and partially breastfeeding individuals, and $78 for people breastfeeding more than one infant. USDA’s FY 2026 memo also lists the federal cash-value benefit amounts for children, pregnant and postpartum participants, and breastfeeding participants.

You can use the produce benefit for fresh, frozen, canned, and dried fruits and vegetables. Organic fruits and vegetables are included. Benefits are monthly and valid for 30 days from the date issued.

Farmers markets

Starting with the 2025 season, many WIC-authorized farmers markets in California accept the California WIC Card using the QR code on the card. The farmers market guide explains that farmers scan the QR code and you enter your PIN. Use the market location tool to look for markets near you.

How to apply for WIC in California

The fastest path is usually to call the local WIC office nearest you. Many offices can start by phone, but local steps vary. Ask if your appointment can be by phone, video, or in person.

  1. Use the WIC office finder or call 1-800-852-5770.
  2. Tell the office you want to apply for WIC and ask for the soonest appointment.
  3. Ask what documents they need for your household.
  4. Ask whether Medi-Cal, CalFresh, or CalWORKs proof can be used for income.
  5. At the appointment, WIC staff will check eligibility and do a simple nutrition assessment.

California says WIC benefits can be loaded onto the California WIC Card after you qualify, so you can use the card to buy approved foods. The official WIC Card page explains the card, PIN, balance, and customer service numbers.

Documents to gather

Bring or ask about Examples Tip
ID ID for you and any child under age 5. Ask what is accepted if you do not have a photo ID.
Address Rent paper, utility bill, paycheck with address, or other proof. Tell WIC if you are staying with someone.
Income Paycheck, tax return, employer letter, or benefit proof. Bring Medi-Cal, CalFresh, or CalWORKs proof if you have it.
Pregnancy Proof of pregnancy if applying while pregnant. Ask your clinic what form they can give you.
Medical forms Provider forms for special formula or nutrition needs. Do not wait if your baby has feeding issues.

Shopping with the California WIC Card

California WIC uses one card for the family’s WIC food benefits. You can buy all foods at once or only a few items at a time. You have 30 days to use benefits after they are issued.

Use the California WIC App before you shop. It can show your food balance, expiration date, appointments, WIC offices, authorized grocers, and whether a scanned item is WIC-approved. This matters because a food can look right but still fail at checkout because of size, brand, package type, or store system updates.

Tip for checkout

Put WIC foods together and use the WIC Card first. If an item does not work, ask the cashier or manager to check the exact size and brand. If it still does not work, take a photo of the item and call your WIC office.

Formula and medical nutrition needs

California WIC contract formulas changed in 2025. The formula transition page says Enfamil is the milk-based formula brand and Similac is the soy-based formula brand. Families should buy the brand, type, size, and number of cans shown in their WIC Food Balance.

If your baby needs a formula or nutritional product that is not part of the regular WIC package, ask your health care provider about the medical formula process. Do not switch a baby with medical feeding needs without help from a health care provider.

If you are pregnant or newly postpartum, ASMOM’s maternity support guide may help you look for coverage, pumps, and care after birth.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Waiting until benefits expire. Check the “last day to use” in the app.
  • Guessing at income. Use gross income, before taxes and deductions.
  • Skipping WIC because you work. Working families can still apply.
  • Forgetting Medi-Cal or CalFresh proof. It may make income screening easier.
  • Buying the wrong size. Scan items and check the food balance first.
  • Waiting on formula issues. Call WIC and your provider as soon as possible.

Immigration, language, and privacy questions

WIC is often used by mixed-status families. If immigration worries are stopping you from applying, ask a trusted legal aid office before you skip food or health support. Current public charge information has been changing and can depend on the exact immigration case. The ILRC update page gives current public charge updates, and ASMOM’s California legal help guide can help you find local legal aid.

WIC offices can also serve families in many languages. Ask for an interpreter when you call. Do not sign forms you do not understand.

If you are denied, delayed, or your benefits look wrong

Start with the local WIC office. Ask what rule caused the problem and what document would fix it. If you get a written notice, keep it. California’s WIC forms page includes participant rights, notices, and WIC forms.

If your WIC issue is about denial, reduction, or ending benefits, ask about a fair hearing. Do not miss the deadline listed on your notice. If the problem is only a shopping issue, ask the office to check your food package and card balance first.

Backup help that can work with WIC

WIC is only one food support path. It can work with CalFresh, Medi-Cal, child care aid, housing help, and local food resources. CalFresh is California’s SNAP program and gives monthly EBT food benefits to eligible households. The state CalFresh page explains the program, and BenefitsCal is the official benefits portal for food, cash aid, and health coverage.

Can I get WIC if I already get CalFresh?

Yes. WIC and CalFresh can be used together. CalFresh may also help show that your household meets WIC income rules, but WIC staff still make the final decision.

How much is the California WIC fruits and vegetables benefit?

As of the April 2026 update, California lists $26 per month for children ages 1 to 5, $48 for pregnant and postpartum individuals, $52 for breastfeeding individuals, and $78 for people breastfeeding more than one infant.

What if my WIC card is lost?

Call California WIC Card Customer Service at 1-844-469-3264. The WIC Card page says this line can help with lost, stolen, or damaged cards, PIN changes, and food balance questions.

What if WIC says I do not qualify?

Ask for the reason in writing and what proof could change the decision. If you receive a notice, read the appeal or fair hearing deadline and ask WIC how to request a review.
