Bottom line
In California, SNAP is called CalFresh. It gives eligible households monthly food benefits on an EBT card. You can use the card at many grocery stores, farmers markets, and some online grocery stores. CalFresh is not a loan and does not have to be paid back when you are eligible.
For most single mothers, the best first step is to apply through BenefitsCal, the official California benefits portal. You can also ask for help from your county office, a food bank, or 211. If you need food today, do not wait for a CalFresh decision. Use the emergency food options below while your application is pending.
If you need food today
If your family is out of food, start with these steps today:
- Apply for CalFresh and ask about expedited service. Some households can get benefits within three calendar days.
- Call or search 211 California for nearby food pantries, hot meals, diapers, shelter, and other urgent help.
- Use the food bank network to find a regional food bank that can point you to local distributions.
- Ask your child’s school about free breakfast, lunch, afterschool meals, summer meals, and SUN Bucks.
- If your EBT card is missing or your benefits were stolen, call 877-328-9677 right away and check the EBT safety page.

CalFresh basics for single mothers
CalFresh is California’s name for SNAP. The CalFresh program gives monthly electronic benefits that can be used to buy most foods. Benefits go on an EBT card. The card works much like a debit card, but it can only be used for eligible items.
You do not have to be unemployed to apply. Many families who qualify work part time or full time. A county worker looks at your household size, income, certain expenses, and special rules. A household is usually the people who buy and prepare food together. If you and your children buy and eat food together, you are usually one CalFresh household.
CalFresh can help, but it may not cover the full grocery bill. It is best used with WIC, school meals, summer food help, food banks, and farmers market matching programs when those are available near you.
What you can buy
SNAP rules allow most food for the household, such as fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, dairy, breads, cereals, snacks, nonalcoholic drinks, and seeds or plants that grow food. The USDA food list explains the federal rules. You generally cannot use CalFresh for alcohol, tobacco, hot foods at the point of sale, vitamins, medicine, pet food, cleaning supplies, paper goods, hygiene items, or delivery fees.
Where you can use it
You can use CalFresh at many grocery stores, small markets, and farmers markets. Some online grocery stores also accept EBT for eligible food, but fees, tips, and non-food items usually need another payment method. Use the EBT store locator to check stores near you.
Income limits and benefit amounts
CalFresh amounts change by federal fiscal year. The amounts below are for October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026. They are a guide, not a promise. Your county makes the final decision. Your actual benefit may be lower than the maximum because income and deductions matter.
| People in household | Gross monthly income limit | Maximum monthly CalFresh |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | $2,610 | $298 |
| 2 | $3,526 | $546 |
| 3 | $4,442 | $785 |
| 4 | $5,360 | $994 |
| 5 | $6,276 | $1,183 |
| 6 | $7,192 | $1,421 |
| 7 | $8,110 | $1,571 |
| 8 | $9,026 | $1,789 |
| Each extra person | +$918 | +$218 |
These figures are based on California CalFresh eligibility charts. Check the current CalFresh charts or ask your county if your household is larger, has disability-related costs, has child care costs, pays high rent, or has mixed income.
How to apply for CalFresh in California
You can apply online, by phone, or through your county office. BenefitsCal is the official place to apply and manage your case. GetCalFresh used to process applications, but GetCalFresh now says applications and documents are handled on BenefitsCal. GetCalFresh may still offer support, FAQs, chat, and guidance.
- Apply on BenefitsCal. Create an account or start an application. Choose CalFresh. You can also apply for Medi-Cal or cash aid at the same time if your family needs them.
- Watch for the interview. Your county may call from a number you do not know. Missing the interview can delay or stop the application.
- Upload documents. If something is missing, upload it as soon as you can. Keep screenshots or confirmation numbers.
- Ask for expedited service. If you have little income, little cash, or shelter costs higher than your money on hand, ask the county to screen you.
- Check notices. Read all mail, texts, email, and BenefitsCal messages. Notices explain deadlines, approvals, denials, and reports.
You can find your office through the county office locator. You can also call the statewide CalFresh line at 877-847-3663.
Documents and information checklist
Do not wait to apply just because you do not have every document. Submit the application first so the county can start the clock. Then send proof when the county asks.
| Item | Examples | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Driver’s license, state ID, school ID, other proof | Ask the county what it can accept if your ID was lost. |
| Income | Pay stubs, benefits letters, child support, unemployment | Explain if hours change each week. |
| Rent or mortgage | Lease, rent receipt, statement from landlord | Tell the county if you are behind on rent. |
| Utilities | Gas, electric, water, phone, trash, internet bills | Utility costs may affect the calculation. |
| Child care costs | Receipts, provider statement, copay bill | Report costs you pay so you can work, train, or attend school. |
| Immigration proof | Only for people applying who are not U.S. citizens | Parents may apply for eligible children even if the parent does not apply. |
| School status | Class schedule, financial aid, work-study, program proof | College students may need to show an exemption. |
Special rules that may affect your family
Mixed immigration status families
California says a household may qualify if at least one member is a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or otherwise eligible immigrant. Parents can apply for eligible children even if the parent does not have eligible status. California’s immigrant family page says CalFresh does not affect immigration status or make a person a public charge. Immigration rules can feel stressful, so ask a trusted legal aid group if you need advice about your own case.
College students
Some students can get CalFresh, but students often need an exemption. Exemptions may involve work, work-study, CalWORKs, EOPS, disability, caring for a child, or other facts. Start with the student CalFresh page and ask your campus basic needs office for help.
Work rules in 2026
Starting June 1, 2026, California is changing how it applies CalFresh work and community engagement rules for some adults. The state says the rules may apply to people ages 18 to 64 who do not have a disability and do not have a dependent child under age 14. Many single mothers caring for a young child may be exempt, but do not guess. Read any county notice and check the CalFresh work rules page if you get a notice.
SSI, disability, and health costs
If someone in your home is older or has a disability, ask the county how medical costs, disability benefits, and household rules affect the case. Do not assume you are ineligible because someone gets SSI, Medi-Cal, or other help.
Other food help for California families
CalFresh is important, but it is not the only food program. A strong plan uses more than one source when possible.
WIC for pregnancy, babies, and young children
California WIC helps pregnant people, postpartum parents, babies, and children up to age 5. It can provide healthy foods, nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and referrals. Foster parents, grandparents, and working families may also use WIC for eligible children. WIC is separate from CalFresh, so apply even if you already receive CalFresh.
SUN Bucks and summer meals
SUN Bucks is California’s Summer EBT program for eligible children. For summer 2026, California says the program provides $120 per eligible child. Many children get it automatically, while some families need to apply through the child’s school. Children can still use other food help, including CalFresh and summer meal programs.
School meals
California’s Universal Meals Program requires public school districts, county offices of education, and charter schools serving TK-12 students to provide breakfast and lunch at no charge each school day to students requesting a meal. Ask your school about meal times, afterschool meals, summer meals, and whether household forms are still needed for school funding or SUN Bucks matching.
Farmers market matching
Some farmers markets and farm-direct sites offer Market Match, which can match CalFresh dollars for fruits and vegetables up to a site limit. Use the Market Match site before you go because locations and match amounts can change.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Waiting too long to apply. Apply first, then send documents.
- Missing the interview. Answer calls from the county and check voicemail.
- Not reporting child care costs. These costs may matter in the benefit calculation.
- Ignoring SAR 7 or renewal forms. Missing a report can stop benefits.
- Using unofficial EBT apps. Use official EBT tools and never share your PIN.
- Assuming denial is final. You can ask for the reason, send missing proof, or request a hearing.
Protect your EBT card
California has moved EBT clients to chip and tap cards. CDSS says benefits transfer automatically to the new card, and cardholders can activate the mailed card by using it normally. Use chip or tap before swiping when possible.
Never give your EBT card number, PIN, Social Security number, or BenefitsCal login to someone who calls or texts you. The state and county will not call or text asking for your EBT card number and PIN. If your card is lost, stolen, damaged, or your benefits look wrong, call 877-328-9677 right away. You can also use the official cardholder portal or ebtEDGE tools to freeze the card, change the PIN, and block some risky transactions.
If your application is denied, delayed, or confusing
A denial or delay does not always mean you are out of options. First, read the notice. Look for the reason, the deadline, and whether the county needs missing proof. Then call the county and ask what exact item is needed. Keep notes with the date, time, worker name, and what they told you.
If you disagree with a denial, reduction, overpayment, or termination, you may ask for a state hearing. This article is general information, not legal advice. If the issue involves immigration, an overpayment, fraud claim, domestic violence, disability, or a missed hearing deadline, contact legal aid or a benefits advocate before you act if possible.
While you work on the case, use food banks, 211, WIC, school meals, and local churches or community groups so your family has food now.
