WIC Benefits for Single Mothers in Colorado

Last updated: May 20, 2026

Bottom line

Colorado WIC can help pregnant mothers, postpartum mothers, breastfeeding mothers, babies, and children under age 5 get specific healthy foods, infant formula when needed, nutrition support, breastfeeding help, and referrals to other services. It is not cash, and it does not cover every grocery item.

The fastest starting point is to use the Colorado WIC apply page or call a clinic from the WIC clinic locator. A WIC staff member can check your situation, schedule an appointment, and tell you what documents to bring.

If you are also trying to stretch groceries for the whole family, see ASMOM’s WIC program guide and Colorado SNAP help for next steps.

If you need food today

WIC is helpful, but it is not always same-day food. If you have little or no food, call the Food Resource Hotline at 855-855-4626, call 2-1-1, or search 211 food help. These can point you to pantries, meals, SNAP help, and local food programs while your WIC appointment is being set up.

If you are in immediate danger, call 911. If food insecurity is tied to housing, shutoff, safety, or another crisis, start with ASMOM’s emergency help page too.

Where to start

Start with your nearest WIC clinic, not with a random grant list. WIC is run through local clinics in Colorado. A clinic checks eligibility, completes the health and nutrition screening, loads benefits to an eWIC card, and helps you keep benefits active.

Apply online

Use the official referral form linked from the Colorado WIC site. Colorado says WIC staff will contact you within 10 days to see if you might qualify and help set up an appointment.

Call a clinic

Use the clinic locator to search by ZIP code or county. This is often better if you need the first open appointment, a language request, or help replacing a card.

Ask about other help

WIC can connect you to health care, food, and community support. For a broader state starting point, use ASMOM’s Colorado help guide as a broader checklist.

Who may qualify for Colorado WIC

Colorado WIC serves people who live in Colorado and fit one of the WIC groups: pregnant women, mothers breastfeeding a baby under 1, new mothers who were pregnant in the last 6 months, babies, and children younger than 5. Colorado WIC also says dads, grandparents, foster parents, and other caregivers may apply for an eligible child under 5.

You do not have to be a U.S. citizen to be eligible for WIC. If you have immigration questions, especially about your own case, get advice from a qualified legal worker. public charge rules focus mainly on public cash assistance for income maintenance and long-term institutional care, not ordinary noncash food help; still, immigration cases can be different, so do not rely on rumors.

WIC also requires a nutrition assessment. This is usually a simple check by WIC staff. The clinic may ask about height, weight, iron level, pregnancy, feeding, health needs, or your child’s growth. This is not meant to shame you. It helps WIC decide the right food package and support.

Colorado WIC income limits through June 30, 2026

Colorado uses gross income, which means income before taxes and deductions. The current Colorado table is effective July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2026. If you are pregnant, Colorado says to count yourself as two. If your income is a little over the chart, call a clinic anyway and ask if you may still have a path based on household details.

If you or your child already receive Health First Colorado, SNAP, Colorado Works/TANF, or FDPIR, Colorado WIC says your family is automatically income eligible. You still have to complete the WIC appointment and nutrition screening.

Household size Yearly Monthly Weekly
1 $28,953 $2,413 $557

8 $100,178 $8,349 $1,927
Each extra person +$10,175 +$848 +$196

For the full table with twice-monthly and bi-weekly amounts, check the official Colorado WIC income guidelines before you apply.

What WIC gives you in Colorado

WIC gives a monthly food package on an eWIC card. It can include fruits and vegetables, whole grains, cereal, dairy or approved alternatives, eggs, beans, peanut butter or approved alternatives, canned fish for some packages, infant foods, and infant formula if formula is part of the baby’s package. Colorado’s WIC foods page has the current food list and shopping guide.

WIC is a supplement. It will not cover all meals for a month. It is strongest when paired with SNAP, pantry help, school meals, Medicaid, and local support. For other food programs, use ASMOM’s SNAP food guide for other options.

WIC support What it can do What to check
Food benefits Helps buy approved foods listed in your WIC benefits. Brands, sizes, and amounts must match.
Produce benefit Monthly fruit and vegetable amount for eligible participants. FY 2026 amounts are $26 for children, $48 for pregnant/postpartum participants, and $52 for breastfeeding participants under USDA policy.
Formula May help with approved infant formula. Medical formula needs clinic and provider documentation.
Breastfeeding help Can include peer support, lactation help, pumps, and supplies. Ask your clinic early, before you return to work or school.
Referrals Can connect you to health care, food, and community services. Ask for names, numbers, and next steps.

USDA’s current FY 2026 CVB memo lists the fruit and vegetable benefit amounts for October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026. Colorado also posted a new food list starting March 1, 2026, with changes such as more cereal options, updated yogurt rules, and selected nut or seed butter options.

How to apply for WIC in Colorado

You can apply two ways. First, submit the online referral linked from Colorado WIC. Second, contact a local WIC clinic directly. Calling the clinic can be useful if you need a specific appointment time, interpreter help, a replacement card, or a faster answer.

At your appointment, WIC staff will tell you if you qualify. They may check income, Colorado residency, identity, and the health or nutrition needs of each person applying. If approved, you will get a Colorado WIC card and instructions for using it.

What to bring or have ready

  • Identification for the parent or caregiver.
  • Identification or records for the baby or child, if applying for a child.
  • Proof that you live in Colorado.
  • Proof of household income, unless you are using Medicaid, SNAP, TANF, or FDPIR as income proof.
  • Any clinic, doctor, or hospital papers that show recent height, weight, iron, pregnancy, or infant feeding information.
  • Questions about formula, breastfeeding, pumping, allergies, special diets, transportation, or language needs.

Tip for busy parents

Take photos of documents before your appointment and keep paper copies in one folder. If paperwork is a problem, use ASMOM’s documents checklist to make a simple benefits folder.

Shopping with the Colorado eWIC card

Colorado WIC uses an eWIC card that works like a debit card for WIC-approved items. You can check your balance in the WICShopper app, on ebtEDGE, by calling the number on the card, on your last receipt, or through your clinic. Colorado’s eWIC page says benefits may be loaded electronically and one card can serve the whole family.

Before you shop, check your benefit balance and use the WICShopper app or the Colorado food list. The WIC store guide says unused monthly benefits expire at midnight on the last day of the month and cannot be replaced after they expire.

Common checkout problems

  • The food is approved, but not in the size or brand on your benefit list.
  • The store has an old shelf tag or the barcode is not in the system.
  • Your PIN was entered wrong too many times and the card locked.
  • Your benefits expired because the month ended.

If an item will not ring up, do not pay with cash unless you are okay not being reimbursed. Colorado says WIC cannot pay you back for an item bought with another payment. Keep the receipt, take photos of the label and barcode, and contact your clinic or use the WICShopper problem tool.

Farmers, produce, and stretching food money

Colorado WIC allows monthly fruit and vegetable benefits to be used with WIC-authorized farmers in approved places such as farms, farmers markets, and roadside stands. Colorado notes that individual farmers are approved, not the whole market, so look for a WIC-approved farmer sign and ask before you shop. The WIC farmers page explains what produce can and cannot be bought from authorized farmers.

If you receive SNAP, Double Up Food Bucks can help stretch fruit and vegetable purchases at participating markets and stores. Program rules and participating locations can change, so check before you travel.

Breastfeeding, pumping, and formula help

WIC is not only for formula. It can also help parents who breastfeed, chestfeed, pump, combine feeding methods, or need support deciding what is realistic. Colorado WIC’s peer counselor page says peer counselors can answer questions, connect you with lactation experts, help with supply concerns, and help you obtain a pump if needed.

If you are returning to work or school, ask about pump options before the week you return. If your baby needs special formula or medical foods, ask the clinic what provider form is needed. Do not switch formulas for medical reasons without talking to your baby’s doctor or clinic.

For more pregnancy and postpartum support, use ASMOM’s maternity support and postpartum coverage guides. For health coverage questions, see health coverage help and Health First Colorado for current coverage rules.

If your application is delayed, denied, or confusing

If you are waiting for a call after an online referral, check missed calls and texts. If it has been more than 10 days, call the clinic you selected or contact the Colorado WIC state office through the WIC contact page. Ask for the next available appointment and whether another clinic can see you sooner.

If you disagree with a WIC decision, ask the clinic how to request a fair hearing. Colorado’s rights page says participants can ask for a fair hearing within 60 days if they do not agree with a decision about WIC benefits.

If your benefits were denied, delayed, closed, or reduced in another program too, see ASMOM’s benefits problem guide. If you need legal help for a benefits, housing, safety, or custody issue, see legal help for next steps.

Backup food help while you wait

WIC can be one part of a larger food plan. A single mother may need WIC for a baby or toddler, SNAP for household groceries, a pantry for emergency food, school meals for older children, and health coverage for pregnancy or postpartum care.

  • SNAP: The Colorado Department of Human Services says SNAP helps low-income households buy food and can be used with a Colorado EBT card. Start with the Colorado SNAP page before applying.
  • PEAK: Use Colorado PEAK to apply for or manage medical, food, cash, and other state benefits.
  • Food pantries: Call the Food Resource Hotline or 2-1-1 for current pantry and meal site information.
  • Baby items: For diapers, clothes, and baby supplies, start with ASMOM’s baby gear help for options.
  • Local help: For county and nonprofit help, use ASMOM’s community support guide for county options.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Waiting until food is gone. WIC may take time. Use pantry and hotline help while your appointment is pending.
  • Skipping the appointment. If you miss it, call quickly to reschedule so your case does not stall.
  • Guessing at approved foods. Use the app, food list, or receipt before checkout.
  • Letting benefits expire. WIC benefits do not roll over after the month ends.
  • Selling WIC items. Do not sell, trade, or return WIC foods, formula, cards, or pumps for cash or credit.
  • Not asking for accommodations. Ask the clinic about language help, disability accommodations, phone options, or recent doctor measurements if transportation is hard.
