Bottom line
Vermont WIC can help pregnant moms, new moms, babies, and children under age 5 get healthy foods, nutrition support, breastfeeding help, and referrals. You do not have to be married to apply. A parent, foster parent, grandparent, guardian, or other caregiver may apply for a child who is under 5.
The best first step is to start with the Vermont WIC application. You can also text Apply to 1-844-839-8942 or contact a local WIC office. For a plain national overview, see our WIC overview.
WIC is not cash. In Vermont, benefits are usually used with an eWIC card at approved stores. The food list, amounts, and rules depend on pregnancy status, breastfeeding status, the child’s age, medical needs, and WIC nutrition rules.
If you need food today
WIC is important, but it may not fix a same-day food emergency. If you need food now, call 2-1-1 or use Vermont 211 to ask for nearby food shelves, baby supplies, formula help, shelter support, and crisis services. You can also ask about 3SquaresVT benefits, Vermont’s SNAP program.
If your baby needs a special formula or has a feeding problem, call your child’s doctor and your WIC office. If there is a medical emergency, call 911.
Where to start
Start with WIC if you are pregnant, recently had a baby, breastfeeding or chestfeeding, or caring for a child under 5. Vermont WIC says it offers food benefits, nutrition education, breastfeeding support, counseling, and programs for eligible families. You can read the state program page at Vermont WIC.
1. Apply or ask
Fill out the online form, text WIC, or call your local office. If you are unsure, apply anyway and let WIC tell you what proof they need.
2. Gather basics
Have names, birth dates, address, income proof if needed, and any Medicaid, Dr. Dynasaur, 3SquaresVT, or Reach Up information.
3. Complete the appointment
Some visits may be in person. Some may be by phone or video. Ask for help if transportation, work, or child care makes this hard.
WIC is only one part of a larger food plan. Many families also use Vermont SNAP help, food shelves, school meals, child care food programs, and local aid. If you need a wider list of Vermont programs, see our Vermont assistance guide.
Quick reference for Vermont WIC
| Need | Best starting point | Reality check |
|---|---|---|
| Start a WIC application | Use the Vermont WIC online form, text Apply to 1-844-839-8942, or call a local office. | A WIC worker may still need to verify identity, Vermont residency, income, and nutrition need. |
| Food for a baby or child | Ask WIC what food package fits the child’s age and health needs. | WIC pays only for approved foods, brands, sizes, and amounts. |
| Food today | Call 2-1-1 or search Vermont 211 for nearby food shelves. | Food shelves may have hours, limits, or proof rules. |
| Longer food help | Apply for 3SquaresVT and ask Vermont Foodbank for application help. | SNAP and WIC can often work together, but they are different programs. |
| Breastfeeding help | Ask WIC about peer counselors, lactation help, classes, and referrals. | Support depends on local staffing and your needs. |
Who may qualify for WIC in Vermont
WIC is for certain people with nutrition needs. In Vermont, this can include a person who is pregnant, breastfeeding, recently had a baby, or caring for an infant or child under age 5. Caregivers can apply for a child even if they are not the child’s birth parent.
Vermont also lists an easier income path for some families. If you or the child already receive Medicaid, Dr. Dynasaur, 3SquaresVT, or Reach Up, tell WIC. That may show income eligibility without a separate income review. You can still be asked for other proof, such as identity, address, or appointment information.
Federal WIC rules also require a nutrition assessment. This is not meant to shame you or your child. It is how WIC decides what food package, education, and support fit your family. The USDA explains the broad rules on its WIC eligibility page, and Vermont has a state WIC eligibility page.
Tip
If you are pregnant, ask WIC how to count your household size. Federal WIC guidance says a pregnant person may be counted with the expected baby or babies when household size is figured.
Vermont WIC income limits for 2025-2026
WIC income limits are tied to federal poverty rules and are updated each year. The limits below are for Vermont and the other contiguous states. They are effective from July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026. WIC usually looks at gross income before taxes unless another benefit shows income eligibility.
| Household size | Annual | Monthly | Weekly |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $28,953 | $2,413 | $557 |
| 2 | $39,128 | $3,261 | $753 |
| 3 | $49,303 | $4,109 | $949 |
| 4 | $59,478 | $4,957 | $1,144 |
| 5 | $69,653 | $5,805 | $1,340 |
| 6 | $79,828 | $6,653 | $1,536 |
| 7 | $90,003 | $7,501 | $1,731 |
| 8 | $100,178 | $8,349 | $1,927 |
| Each extra person | +$10,175 | +$848 | +$196 |
For the official table, use the federal WIC income limits. If your income changes often, ask WIC which pay stubs or proof to bring. If you recently lost work, had hours cut, left an unsafe home, or started maternity leave, say that clearly during the appointment.
What WIC gives in Vermont
WIC gives approved foods and support, not a blank grocery card. Your package may include foods such as fruits, vegetables, milk, cheese, yogurt, eggs, whole grains, cereal, beans, peanut butter, infant foods, or formula, depending on your category and needs. Not every person gets every food.
One important part is the fruit and vegetable benefit, often called the cash value benefit. For federal fiscal year 2026, the USDA lists these monthly fruit and vegetable amounts for most WIC participants:
| Participant | Monthly fruit and vegetable amount | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Child age 1 through 4 | $26 | For eligible children with an active WIC food package. |
| Pregnant or postpartum participant | $48 | Amount may depend on category and certification. |
| Fully or mostly breastfeeding participant | $52 | Breastfeeding status can affect the package. |
These amounts come from the USDA FY2026 WIC amounts. Other WIC foods are listed by item and quantity, not as open cash. Vermont also posts a WIC shopping guide so families can check approved foods, brands, sizes, and shopping tips.
WIC can also connect you with nutrition education and feeding support. For breastfeeding or chestfeeding help, Vermont WIC offers peer support, lactation help, classes, and other resources through breastfeeding support.
How to apply for Vermont WIC
You can start online, by text, or by calling a local office. After you ask for WIC, a local staff person should contact you about next steps. If you miss the call, call back as soon as you can. Some WIC calls may come from a private or blocked number.
Vermont WIC says some appointments can be handled by phone or video. The state explains this on its remote appointments page. You may be asked to send secure photos of documents. If you do not have height, weight, or iron information, ask whether the appointment can still be completed and what to do next.
| Bring or ask about | Examples | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Photo ID, birth record, crib card, or other accepted proof. | WIC must know who is applying and who the benefits are for. |
| Vermont address | Lease, mail, shelter letter, or other proof WIC accepts. | WIC is run by state residency rules. |
| Income or benefit proof | Pay stubs, unemployment, child support, Medicaid, Dr. Dynasaur, 3SquaresVT, or Reach Up. | Some benefits may show income eligibility. |
| Health information | Pregnancy due date, child age, feeding concerns, allergies, formula needs, or provider notes. | This helps WIC choose the right food package and referrals. |
| Barriers | No transportation, no printer, limited phone minutes, work hours, language needs, or homelessness. | WIC may be able to explain options or connect you to help. |
If you are also applying for cash or food benefits, our Reach Up help and SNAP overview may help you prepare.
Using your Vermont eWIC card
After approval, WIC benefits are loaded to an eWIC card. Vermont says benefits are loaded at 12:00 a.m. on the first day of the month and expire at 11:59 p.m. on the last day of the month. Unused benefits do not roll over.
You can check your balance with ebtEDGE, the WICShopper app, a store receipt, or the phone number on the back of the card. Vermont explains these options on its WIC balance page.
Common shopping problems
- The item is healthy, but it is not the approved size, brand, or type.
- The benefit month ended, so the item no longer shows on the card.
- The child changed age groups and the food package changed.
- A formula or medical food needs WIC or provider approval first.
At the store, check your balance before checkout and keep the receipt. If something does not scan as WIC-approved, do not argue with the cashier. Ask your WIC office what went wrong and whether the item is allowed.
Extra Vermont WIC benefits and local help
WIC can open the door to other savings. Vermont keeps a page of WIC discounts, such as certain energy, phone, internet, museum, transportation, or family supports. The list can change, so check the current page before you make plans.
Vermont WIC also connects some families to seasonal Farm to Family activities and farmers market coupons when funding is available. Check the current Farm to Family schedule or ask your local office. These programs can run out or be first come, first served.
For babies and young children, support may also come through local home visiting, early childhood, and development programs. Help Me Grow can help Vermont families find child development and family support services. For supplies, see our baby gear help.
If WIC says no, delays your case, or benefits stop
Ask for the reason in plain words. It may be missing documents, income proof, residency proof, age, category, or an appointment issue. If you think the decision is wrong, ask the local WIC office how to request a review or fair hearing.
Vermont WIC information says participants can ask for a conference or fair hearing within 60 days of the notice. If you are already certified and want benefits to continue while the appeal is pending, ask quickly. Vermont says this request must be made within 15 days of the notice and within your certification period.
This is general information, not legal advice. If a benefits problem affects your housing, safety, food, or health, contact an advocate, legal aid, or a trusted local organization. For wider urgent support, see our emergency help.
Other food and family help in Vermont
Many single mothers need more than WIC. WIC is limited by age, food category, and approved items. These backup paths may help fill gaps:
- 3SquaresVT: Apply through MyBenefits or ask for help with the application. Vermont Foodbank has 3SquaresVT help and can explain common next steps.
- Food shelves: Call 2-1-1 for nearby food shelves, meal sites, diapers, and baby supplies.
- Health coverage: If pregnancy, birth, or child health costs are a problem, see our Medicaid guide and health care guide.
- Child care: If child care costs block work or school, see our child care help.
- Housing pressure: Food help will not fix rent alone. If housing is unstable, see our housing help.
- Work and family issues: If pregnancy or parenting affects your job, see our pregnancy work rights. If support from the other parent is part of your budget, see our child support guide.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Waiting because you are not sure. Apply and let WIC decide. Many families think they earn too much when they may still qualify.
- Forgetting to report a change. Tell WIC if your baby is born, you move, your income changes, your child changes custody, or formula needs change.
- Not checking the balance. Benefits expire each month. Check before shopping so you know what is left.
- Buying the wrong size. A food may be allowed only in certain sizes or types. Use the shopping guide or WICShopper app.
- Skipping other help. WIC is helpful, but it is not meant to cover all food needs. Use SNAP, food shelves, school meals, and local programs too.

FAQ
Can a single mother apply for WIC in Vermont?
Yes. WIC is not based on marital status. A pregnant person, new parent, breastfeeding parent, or caregiver of a child under 5 may apply if the family meets WIC rules.
Can I get WIC and 3SquaresVT at the same time?
Many families use both. 3SquaresVT is Vermont’s SNAP program, and WIC is a separate nutrition program for pregnancy, babies, and children under 5. Tell WIC if you already receive 3SquaresVT because it may help with income eligibility.
How much is the WIC fruit and vegetable benefit?
For federal fiscal year 2026, USDA lists monthly fruit and vegetable amounts of $26 for children age 1 through 4, $48 for pregnant or postpartum participants, and $52 for fully or mostly breastfeeding participants. Your full food package depends on your category and needs.
Do Vermont WIC benefits roll over?
No. Vermont says WIC benefits are loaded on the first day of the month and expire at the end of the month. Unused benefits do not roll over.
What if I do not have a car?
Ask your local WIC office if your appointment can be remote. You can also call 2-1-1 to ask about transportation help, nearby food shelves, and local family services.
What if WIC denies my application?
Ask why in writing or in plain words. You may be able to fix missing documents or request a conference or fair hearing. Vermont WIC materials say the hearing request must be made within 60 days of the notice.
